t is on. we have a lot of serious news this morning, as well. >> we do. a startling twist in the colorado tragedy. authorities are investigating a notebook believed to be from shooting suspect james holmes, full of details about his plans for a massacre. there's so many questions about when it was received and could it have prevented the shooting. >> it was sent to a college psychiatrist. and serious scare for baseball great cal ripken jr., his mother held at gunpoint held for almost 24 hour, and her kidnapper is still on the loose. >> thank fully she is all right. >> and dangerous weather across the country. sam is tracking it all. good morning, sam. >> good morning. robin, good morning. george. after this bigtime summer heat goes on and on, the only thing break the heat are the storms. sometimes the storms are more dangerous than the heat as well. this is in the last 24 hours. right around the great lakes and plains. where the heat was during the day yesterday. more than 200 storm reports. just to remind you here, we're talking about, even at night, we're getting these flashes of lightning and what that lightning can do to a home like in wisconsin yesterday. hitting a house, setting it on

fire right in the middle of that field. today, we think the storm situation will be worse. the storm prediction center put out the second highest level of concern in the bright red zone. and not only from cincinnati to new york to boston do we think these storms will light up to be severe, with the potential of being long-running storms. in this zone right here, pennsylvania to new york, all of the way into massachusetts there. we think there will be a potential risk for dated does this afternoon. everyone outside in the summer heat, the daytime campers, you have to be concerned after 3:00 today we're in line for powerful storms. robin. george. >> sam, thanks very much. we turn to josh elliott for the other top stories. right to the huge development in the colorado movie theater shooting. word now that suspect james holmes, may have mailed a notebook detailing his deadly plot to the university of colorado. "gma" weekend anchor dan harris has been following every development of this story, joins

us now from aurora this morning. good morning to you, dan. >> reporter: josh, good morning to you. the investigation into the lethal plot allegedly hatched in the apartment building right behind me is heating up this morning with that disturbing new discovery. overnight, while the windows at the apartment of suspect james holmes were fixed up and people were allowed back into a place formerly rigged with booby traps, behind the screenes. investigators were reading through a notebook, believed to be written by holmes that was mailed to the university of krad doerks where holmes had been a student until dropping out last month. fox news is reporting the spiral notebook was mailed to a psychiatrist at the university, and it contains, quote full details about how he was going to kill people. drawings of what he was going to do in it. drawings and illustrations of the massacre. >> they're going to start going through it, looking for preplanning, motivation, purchase of weapons. >> reporter: one of the sources that spoke to fox indicated that

the package arrived on campus july 12th, more than a week before the massacre, but wasn't found until this past monday, during a search of the mail room. raising question about whether the massacre could have been reported. campus officials call that report inaccurate and say the package was delivered by the post office on the same day it was found. those officials refusing to say whether holmes was seeing a psychiatrist, although they insist they handled his case correctly all along. >> to the best of our knowledge, we did everything we think we should have done. >> reporter: on a brighter note, we've learned that three of the hospitals treating the wounded have decided to either reduce or eliminate their medical bills. many of the victims are young and uninsured. josh, back to you. >> a touch of good news there. some frightening moments in arkansas, an entire town was evacuated west of little rock because of a fast-moving wildfire there. about 2500 people had to flee as

these dry conditions also fueling several fires across north and central nebraska. because of the extreme drought, the price of corn has jumped 50% since june. and the government now predicts milk and beef prices will rise an average of 27 cents by early next year. how about a dozen eggs? 18 cents more as farmers struggle to survive this grueling summer. >> there's word this morning the ripple effects of the tough economy are being felt all of the way to the maternity ward. america's birth rate is now the lowest in 25 years. people in their 20s are worried about jobs and student loans and are putting off having a baby. take a look here. a dicey rescue operation high above the las vegas strip. take a look there. four window washers had to be lowered to safety one by one after being stranded outside the vdara hotel. 35 floors up for three hours. firefighters had to rappel down the side of the building to reach them.

"your voice, your vote." mitt romney in london this morning. meeting with the british prime minister during his first stop on a big trip overseas. david muir is our man on the romney campaign. david, romney says he's not going attack president obama on this trip, but he has had to answer a british tabloid report that suggests his campaign is doing just that. >> reporter: absolutely right. mitt romney landing to the controversial headline, his alleged criticism of the anglo-saxon relationship. word from advisers quoted in a newspaper here without their names being quoted, but this, of course, comes as romney hopes to invite people to look at his

olympic resume and trying to look presidential on stage. in london this morning, mitt romney meeting with former british prime minister tony blair. just the beginning of many high-level meetings. on his first trip overseas as the presumptive republican nominee. he arrived here to the headline in "the telegraph" saying -- we are part of an anglo-saxon heritage, and he feels the special relationship is special. one adviser then quoted as saying the white house didn't fully appreciate the shared history we have. president obama's senior campaign adviser, david axelrod jumping on it. tweeting, mitt's trip off to a flying start even before he lands with stunningly offensive quotes from his team and british press. in an interview with nbc, romney responding. >> i'm not enthusiastic about adopting the comments made by people who are unnamed. i have a lot of advisers. >> reporter: romney adding the u.s. does have a special relationship with great britain. >> i believe the president understands that. i don't agree with whoever that adviser might be. >> reporter: romney will then

gold in beijing four years ago -- >> absolutely magnificent! carli lloyd secured the winner. >> reporter: -- secured victory in this preliminary match. final score, u.s. 4, france, 2. at the same stadium, an embarrassing boo-boo led to a brief political crisis. >> the wrong flag was put up on the jumbotron. >> reporter: just as the north korean woman's soccer team was warming up, the south korean flag was shown on the big screen. the indignant north korean women marched off the soccer pitch in protest. after an appropriate amount of groveling, they were persuaded to return with the correct flag up in lights. and the flag flap isn't the only scandal. bankrupt greece struggled to mount an olympic team, and now they've had to kick out their top triple jumper after she tweeted something racist about african immigrants.

meanwhile take a look at egyptian olympic uniforms. seems familiar? well, not quite. turns out those nike and adidas logos fake, manufactured in china. nike and adidas have made it clear, they're not amused. then there is, well, let's call it the celebrity olympics. a lot of parties for the famous and fabulous. this was a charity event last night sponsored by mohamed ali, who won boxing gold in 1960. and, yes, the games officially begin tomorrow night. george, robin. >> they're already under way. >> a lot of excitement there. one of the most popular fast food chains in the country is under fire. the president of chick-fil-a has taken a very public stand against same-sex marriage. that sparked a firestorm on the internet. politician on both sides have weighed in. the muppets too. ron claiborne takes a closer look at the controversy and what it means for the company. >> good morning. >> this has really sparked a

cultural firestorm with threats on one side to boycott the popular chicken franchise and keep them from setting up new outlets in several city and a call for massive show of support on the other side. dan cathy is an outspoken christian conservative. this time he's speaking out loudly against guy marriage. >> i think we're inviting god's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, we know better than you at what constitutes marriage. >> reporter: his comments are provoking a powerful backlash, the city of chicago vowing to block the opening of a new chick-fil-a. >> chick-fil-a's values are not chicago's values. >> reporter: boston's mayor and philadelphia councilman also condemning chick-fil-a. and the henson company announced it would end a marketing deal with the fast food chain to put muppets toys in kids meals. and celebrities from roseanne barr, miley cyrus, and ed helms. of "the office" vowing to

henson cut its ties to them because what chick-fil-a claims is the safety of the toys in the children's meals. it's turning into a full-scale culture war. now to a shocking scare for an american sports legend. baseball great cal ripken jr., his mother abducted at gunpoint, held hostage for almost 24 hours. she is home safe now, but her kidnapper is still on the loose. and abc's pierre thomas has that story. >> reporter: cal ripken, baseball's ironman a record of 3,000 games played in a row, got one of the worst scares of his life tuesday. his mother, vi, seen here with ripken in uniform, was missing. and this morning, we know she was kid tapped and blindfolded at gunpoint. >> had a mask on. a gun. she didn't recognize him. he tied her up and put a mask on her. >> reporter: mrs. ripken spoke to her next door neighbor after the suspect dropped her off

unharmed near her home roughly 30 miles east of baltimore. she was found nearly 24 hours after she disappeared with her hands bound behind her back in the backseat of her car. >> she said he was very nice actually. stopped at the royal farms, i guess, got food and other things. and he lit cigarettes for her. >> reporter: police say it's unclear whether mrs. ripken was intentionally targeted. the kidnapper did not ask for a ran some. >> at this time, we don't know what if any relationship there was between the perpetrator of this crime crime and the ripken family. >> reporter: the family said, this has been a trying time for our family. we are grateful and relieved that mom is back with us, safe and healthy. that's the good news. as for the suspect, a white male, tall and thin, late 30s to early 40s. he's still on the run, george. >> he's still loose. okay, pierre, thank you very much. now to justin bieber,

cousin. 34-year-old t.j. jackson. >> i'm devastated that my children -- my grandchildren were taken away from me. >> the ruling in court today was about the guardianship. it was based on lies. i have a good idea of who is doing that. >> reporter: she's an 82-year-old woman. she's emotional. she was reading from a prepared script. she needed help from time to time. >> i have spoke to my grandson, p.j. and also i spoke to prince and paris last night and told them i would be home today. and they're waiting for me to come. >> reporter: in court, t.j. said the call, was, quote, strange. he said the way it sounded, i never heard her talk like that. he said some words sounded slurred. >> i told him it wasn't necessary.

i don't know who instructed him to do that. he wanted me to come home before that happened. >> randy tweeted that on the phone, katherine fired trent and the rest of the security team. >> someone let go the cook, the nanny, and the housekeepers. i don't know who did that. they don't have that power. they shouldn't have done it. it's really bad to hear what is going on at home and the children have been taken away. i know that i'll get there in time to get them back. and after i finish this, i'll be on my way home. >> reporter: presumably, now that she's back in calabassas, the legal process will begin to restore her as the children's guard yen. that's the next chapter and, robin, let's just hope it running more smoothly. >> let's bring in dan abrams. and pick up a little bit of what nick was saying. she is back home.

she did lose temporary custody. what happens now? >> i would expect she'll get it back. it will be a short proceeding. her attorney will petition the court to get her the guardianship back, which i would expect she would. there's nothing to indicate that she's done anything wrong here. >> even a judge said in his ruling, she did nothing wrong. that he was -- because he was citing acts by third parties. >> right. that's right. which makes this all so incredibly bizarre. you have katherine jackson out there saying, look, i don't know what this is all about. this is all a misunderstanding. the authorities have been to the house twice in the last week. you have a court ruling that by the actions of third parties, she was prevented as serving as guardian. you have her grandson saying she's slurring words. and talking in a way that he had never heard before. so, what exactly is going on here? we don't know. let's not assume the legal system has gone nuts. because there was a feeling that there was a need to step in here. remember, number one concern was always protect the kid, protect the kids, protect the kids.

if there's a question, you protect the kids. in this case, there was at the very least a question here. and the court wanted to step in and say, at least for now, the grandson will take custody. >> we asked randy jackson about the will. if for some reason, even though it doesn't look like the case, the will is thrown out, the children are still the benefactors. they are still the ones that would receive the bulk of his entire state. >> some people have said the entire will should be thrown out. in that case, you can evaluate. i think you're right. no matter what happens, these kids are going to get that money. this has been litigated all the way to the california supreme court. this is -- in my view, the will is a nonissue. >> all right, dan, stay tuned. thanks so much. i thought you were going to be out with the people, sam. >> i can't wait to get out there. it's the biggest crowd i have ever seen out there for the show. and i can't wait to show folks how incredible they are. can you? do we have any kind of live shot

psychiatrist. and we've just learned that fire crews have now contained a fire that forced an entire town in western arkansas to evacuate this morning. the extreme drought fueling wildfires all across the west and midwest and it's actually fueling price increases at the supermarket. the agriculture department predicts the cost of milk, egg, beef, pork, will rise by as much as 5% by year's end. an about face this morning from one of the titans of the banking industry. the man who built one of the world's biggest banks, citigroup, is having second thoughts. former ceo sandy weill says it's time to break up the big banks and separate those who take deposits and those that take risky gambles. he says it's the only way to protect taxpayers saying, our system has been hijacked. authorities in maryland trying to find the man who kidnapped cal ripken jr.'s mother at gun point, holding her for 12 hours, tying her up. the suspect did event eventually

what are you hearing from people? >> they had been living together. kristen has been living in robert's home. from what we understand, she's still there. he's not. he's not in the house right now. he seems to have left. certainly he hasn't moved out, but he's not in the same home they were living in. >> not a good sign. >> not. >> logan, i want to ask you. we have seen such an outpouring online from fans that are truly devastated by this. why are they so invested in this couple? >> we expend a lot of emotion living vicariously through celebrities in our own world. we use them for our own fantasy fodder. we feel like we can be them. sometimes there's a big difference between characters, fantasy, and reality. >> i think in this case, maybe there wasn't so much difference. i think that was fun for people to watch them on camera and go, wow, and they're doing this in real life, too. >> we are, but the truth is, we don't know what their relationship is.
